Christmas lecture | The Mystery of Light and Sound

Among the many wave phenomena there are two that help us perceive our surroundings and communicate with one another. We form images and see by means of light waves, while we speak to one another through sound waves. 

All earthly life is primarily dependent on light. Light is faster and quieter than anything that exists; it warms, delights, but can also burn us. What is light? It is said: God is love, God is light. 

In the prologue of the Gospel of John it is written: In the beginning was the Word. Here sound is regarded as the beginning of creation. What then is the relationship between light and sound? And how can these forces be meaningful to us in the here and now?
